Pre-writing Activities for Decision Story Short Story/Fiction Unit

Lesson Design

The Learners: Written specifically for 7th graders
 
The Subject Matter:
  • General: Language Arts; Short Story/Fiction Unit 
  • Specific: Elements of characterization, conflict, setting, and plot line, and 6 Traits: Organization, Ideas, Word Choice
 
The Phenomenon: Pre-writing process for writing a short story following a decision story pattern
 
The Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of the prewriting process modeled and practiced over the previous week by applying the steps to their own story idea. Students will be able to use the prewriting steps to effectively organize their story and include the important elements of the decision story pattern.
 
Benchmarks & Standards
  • R.NT.07.02: Analyze the structure, elements, style, and purpose of narrative genre (specifically short story- decision story pattern)
  • W.PR.07.02: Apply a variety of pre-writing strategies for narrative writing
 
Evidence of Achieving the Objective:
Students will turn in the completed templates at the end of the hour, which will include specific information identifying whether or not they understand the prewriting elements of the decision story pattern and if they were able to apply them to their own story idea.
 
The Idea: We are all forced to make challenging decisions throughout our life, but sometimes it is these decisions that most impact our own personal growth. (How do people overcome personal weakness by making positive decisions—even in the hardest of circumstances?)
