CEP 812: A Matter of Ethics
Copying and Fair Use in the 21st Century


Overview: The more we integrate and re-construct the learning environment with technology in mind, the more important it becomes to address the issues of safety, responsibility, and proper usage. The following lesson aims to introduce students to the importance of fair use and copyright laws when using copyrighted material for educational purposes (and even in their personal lives).
 
Target Learners
:
The target learners for this lesson are 7th grade language arts students who will be using and creating internet content throughout this course in a variety of technology contexts (digital storytelling, podcasting, research papers, blogs, wikis, etc).

Objectives: The learner should be able to understand and explain the issues of fair use presented in the lesson. The learner should be able to identify examples and non-examples of fair use. The learner should be able to apply these principles to his/her own technology use for future projects in this class.

Curriculum Standards:
2009 Michigan Educational Technology Standards (Grades 6-8):
  • 6-8.DC.1. provide accurate citations when referencing information sources
  • 6-8.DC.2. discuss issues related to acceptable and responsible use of technology
  • 6-8.DC.3. discuss the consequences related to unethical use of information and communication technologies
  • 6-8.DC.5. create media-rich presentations on the appropriate and ethical use of digital tools and resources
Required Time and Resources:
  •       This plan should cover 2-3 class periods: 1 period for the website activities, 1 period to create the powerpoint presentations, and 1 period to present. It could also be adapted for shorter time by creating groups.
  •       Resources needed will require: internet connection, computer lab/cart (individual or group depending on numbers), Microsoft Office Powerpoint, student flash drives (to save work)
